It all started when I had terrible acne as a teenager. I was put on antibiotics and Retin A for years to “fix” my acne. Instead, it did the opposite and damaged my skin and gut. Back then, the doctors never told me that Retin A would increase your chance of sunburn and that I should be wearing SPF every day, or that long bouts of antibiotics would damage the gut. We didn’t even have sunscreen in my house when I was growing up! I spent years frying in the sun while I was on the Retin A, burning and damaging my skin, and yes, this led to the sun damage that I have now.
Further, the antibiotics wiped out the good bacteria in my gut and left me susceptible to more skin and digestive issues. Fast forward to a 20-year-old me. After three years on birth control, I took myself off of it and my skin went crazy with massive, painful cystic acne. Plus my skin had pigmentation and sun damage so bad that I looked like I had a permanent brown mustache. This was probably one of the most difficult times in my life.
I was working at a health food store at the time, and that’s where I became exposed to natural health, nutrition, supplements, aromatherapy, and herbs.
I was in heaven. I had found my way of life.
But my skin didn’t show health. I was embarrassed at how it looked. I tried every natural skin care product and remedy to fix my skin. The problem was that I was inexperienced. I didn’t know what my skin type was and what products would help me achieve the skin I so desired. I really didn’t know how to work with my skin.
In the meantime, I had finished school to become a Massage Therapist. And since I wanted so badly to learn about the skin — to help myself and others who had similar skin conditions — I signed up for Aesthetician school. I fell in love with learning about the skin and how it functions and what it needs to thrive and be healthy.
Finally my hormones balanced out and my acne cleared but I was left with sun damage that I needed to repair.
After graduation, I worked at a medical spa for a year and a half, where I learned a lot about how doctors treat skin conditions and what advanced treatments they use for skin issues. It was good experience, but not my approach. I was all about herbs, essential oils, natural treatments, and I wanted to take my time with clients and get to know them personally. So I quit, and opened up my own business doing skin care and massage therapy. I was in love with what I was doing, but I had a calling to make a bigger impact in my work. I went on to become a yoga instructor, and began searching for a natural skin care product line to bring into my business so that it matched who I was. I wanted to stop using chemical-based products on my clients, but I was disappointed with what I found. All of the natural product lines that I experimented with may have smelled nice, but they did not provide the results that the professional products had.
Then one day it struck me. I said, “I can make my own skin care products!” I studied around the clock: how to make skin care products, which ingredients deliver results, how to make formulas and keep them stable, the ins and outs of product formulation, etc. It was intense, exhausting, and deeply rewarding.
My clients were my guinea pigs. God bless them. I’m so grateful for them all. They trusted me and fell in love with my products even though I wasn’t in love with them yet. They were patient with me as I kept tweaking the formulations that they loved.
Each of my products was born out of a need — something that I needed for my skin or that my clients needed for their skin. I began to see the transformations in my clients’ skin as they and I continued to use only these products for their facials and home care. The results were impressive, and we noticed that their skin was noticeably improving with use of these natural products.
But I had to keep working to improve my formulas. I wanted to quit so many times, because it’s damn intense and hard to be a product formulator and build a business from the ground up! But my clients wouldn’t let me give up. They were so in love with the products and kept telling me how much they had changed their skin and life. I knew I needed to persist.
It took six years of experimenting to get each formula exactly right, where I’m deeply proud of the results each delivers, each individual scent, and how each formulation feels on the skin.
