Ahhh, warm, humid weather…I know some people aren’t a fan of humidity, but my skin LOVES it! I wake up with less tightness to my skin, I can get away with using less heavy moisturizers and my skin feels plumper and healthier. Oily skin may not appreciate the humidity as much, but I have solutions for every skin as to how to adjust your skin care for Spring weather.
Living in upstate NY, the dry weather has lifted and humid, damp Spring has arrived. It’s time to change up your skincare products as you do your wardrobe. Here is a guide to achieving glowing skin in the Spring time.
Not everyone needs to make changes in their skin care routine. If what you’ve been doing is still working for you in the humid weather, stick with it. However, this can be a great opportunity to change up some products and see how your skin responds in doing so.
1) Switch To a Gel Based Cleanser
If you’ve been using a cream or oil cleanser, gel cleansers are a little more effective at removing the oil your skin produces as temperatures rise. A great choice is Gentle Cleanser, which is foamy- yet conditioning to the skin.
2) Exfoliate More But Not Too Often
In the winter, the dryness strips the skin of moisture which causes the skin barrier to weaken. Therefore, skin is more sensitive to exfoliation. The more hydrated and oilier the skin is, it can tolorate a little more exfoliation. On average, it’s great to use two types of exfoliants. Physical, such as Skin Revitalizing Scrub, gives an instant polish and removal of dead skin cells. This is great to use once a week. Then chemical exfoliation, using alpha hydroxy acids such as, Refining Lotion, goes and dissolves the bonds that hold skin cells together and works deeper in the skin for dead skin removal. This type is best done twice a week at most. Some people only need to use once a week.
3) Lighten Up On Your Moisturizer
Not everyone will need to do this, especially dry skin. However, I find for most people this is beneficial. Since the skin tends to produce more oil and reap the benefits from moisture in the air, using a less rich moisturizer will prevent the skin pores from becoming clogged. In my post A Guide to All Adina Moisturizers , you can use this as a guide to pick the next richest moisturizer to try this Spring.
4) Load Up On the Antioxidants
While it’s really important to use antioxidant on your skin year round, spending more time outdoors requires us to use antioxidants, especially during the day, to prevent free radical damage from excess sun exposure. I love to start my morning routine with a few spritz of Restorative Mist, then mix Youthful Glow Serum and C-Rejuvenation Serum in to my palm and apply both to my skin. All these products are packed with a plethora of antioxidants and vitamins such as:
- multiple forms of vitamin c
- green tea extract
- CoQ10
- astaxanthin – the most potent antioxidant in the world
- alpha lipoic acid
- edelweiss extract
- and more
5) Load Up On Sun Screen
While the sun is so beneficial for the body, hormones and well-being, too much sun can accelerate aging in the skin. So get a little exposure, but not too much. Applying sun protective products daily such as Sun Salutation, and wearing sun protective clothing, will prevent sun damage and aging in the skin.
